DEFINING LEARNING
My definition of Learning
Is a process of acquiring new concepts and being able to use them in different contexts making connections with past experience or knowledge.
Is the human faculty of understanding the world around. It involves acquiring, transforming and redefining concepts, skills and values. It implies being able to use them in different contexts and interrelate them.
Definition by Ambrose et al. (2010) adapt Mayer (2002)
A process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning
JOURNAL REFLECTION
As I reflect on my process of learning, I realize that it has been a journey filled with various experiences, most of which have been positive. I can still vividly remember my preschool teacher and the games she used to play with us. She always made sure to connect with each of us before starting the class. However, I have also had teachers who made me feel intimidated, and these subjects have been the most challenging ones for me to learn.
After studying Occupational Therapy, I have come to understand that learning through motivation and engagement is crucial. I have always tried to implement this approach with my students. When we were asked to define learning, I initially thought of it as a cognitive process that provides social benefits.
However, when the definition of a process that leads to change was given, I felt like my definition was completed. Learning is undoubtedly what helps us adapt to the environment's demands, not just in terms of acquiring knowledge, but also in terms of how we survive in different contexts.
Every student's learning experience is unique, and educators must adapt their teaching methods to their students' individual needs. Each student has different skills, motivations, and social contexts that can either positively or negatively influence their learning process.
In any case, learning is a valuable gift that we must cherish and promote in every child worldwide, regardless of their conditions or circumstances. It is a fundamental right that makes us human and powerful and equips us with the tools to think and act in a way that we believe is right.
DAILY ACTION: I am going to be more aware of what is that special characteristic that make each of my students unique, and how I can enrich that uniqueness in my classes.
This is my second year in a school as I used to be a teacher in a prek, so the experience was totally different as it was way smaller.
Being a teacher of 12 different classes makes it a little more challenging to identify each child however I do know each of them and their own process is not the same as the home room teacher. This is why I pick this as my daily action.
